Synthesis and complexation properties towards metal ions of new tri-substituted thiacalix[4]arenes

Abstract: New thiacalix[4]arenes appended with three amide functions have been prepared. Their conformations have been solved thanks to 1 H NMR 2D COSY and NOESY. The complexation ability of these ligands towards various metal ions (Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , Pd 2+ ; Ni 2+ , Hg 2+ , Hg + , Ag + , Zn 2+ and Cu 2+) has been investigated by UV-vis absorption and the stoichiometry of the metal-ligand complexes was determined.

“…Enhancement in absorption intensity of previous band of (3) by the addition of Cu 2+ induced the formation of selective complex. This kind of electronic spectra could be assigned as charge transfer absorption take place between lone pair of electrons onto nitrogen atom and Cu 2+ upon complexation (55). Ligand (3) shows high selectivity toward Cu 2+ because considerable increment in absorbance has been observed as compare to free ligand or with other metal ions, as shown in …”

“…16) bearing three amide units and 88d with four amide units on the lower rim showed different complexation abilities towards various metal ions. 96 Derivative 88a binds selectively with Hg + compared to Hg 2+ , whereas 88b forms a selective multivalent complex with Hg 2+ over Hg + . This is due to the presence of the free OH group in 88a, which directs the selectivity towards Hg + complexation.…”

“…The macrocyclic platform of thiacalix[4]arene is one of the convenient building blocks for the creation of dendrimers [ 22 ]. The tendency to form inclusion compounds [ 23 ], the availability of mono-, di-, tri- and tetra-substituted derivatives [ 24 , 25 , 26 ], as well as the existence of spatially pre-organized conformational isomers [ 27 ] ( cone , partial cone , 1,2- and 1,3-alternate ) make the thiacalix[4]arene platform attractive for the preparation of polyfunctional dendrimers with well-oriented spatial organization. The literature presents a limited number of publications on the synthesis of multi(thia)calix[4]arene systems [ 28 , 29 ].…”
