Lanthanide hydrogen-polyphosphates Ln[H(PO3)4] (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho) were synthesised as colourless (Ln = Tb, Dy) and light pink (Ln = Ho) crystalline powders by reaction of Tb4O7/Dy2O3/Ho2O3 with H3PO3 at 380 °C. All compounds crystallise isotypically (P2(1)/c (no. 14), Z = 4, a(Tb) = 1368.24(4) pm, b(Tb) = 710.42(2) pm, c(Tb) = 965.79(3) pm, β(Tb) = 101.200(1)°, 3112 data, 160 parameters, wR2 = 0.062, a(Ho) = 1363.34(5) pm, b(Ho) = 709.24(3) pm, c(Ho) = 959.07(4) pm, β(Ho) = 101.055(1)°, 1607 data, 158 parameters, wR2 = 0.058). The crystal structure comprises two different infinite helical chains of corner-sharing phosphate tetrahedra. In-between these chains the lanthanide ions are located, coordinated by seven oxygen atoms belonging to four different polyphosphate chains. Vibrational, UV/Vis and fluorescence spectra of Ln[H(PO3)4] (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho) as well as Dy[H(PO3)4]:Ln (Ln = Ce, Eu) and the magnetic and thermal behaviour of Tb[H(PO3)4] are reported.

Single crystals of yttrium pentaphosphate(V), YP5O14, were obtained by solid-state reaction. The orthorhombic title compound belongs to the family of ultraphosphates and is the second polymorph of this composition. It is isotypic with its Ho and Er analogues. The structure contains two bridging Q 2-type PO4 tetrahedra and one branching Q 3-type PO4 tetrahedron, leading to infinite ultraphosphate ribbons running along the a axis. The coordination polyhedron around the Y3+ cation may be described as distorted bicapped trigonal-prismatic. The YO8 polyhedra are isolated from each other. They are linked by corner-sharing to the O atoms of six Q 2-type and of two Q 3-type PO4 tetrahedra into a three-dimensional framework.

Extended anionic frameworks based on condensation of polyhedral main group non-metal anions offer a wide range of structure types. Despite the widespread chemistry and earth abundance of phosphates and silicates, there are no reports of extended ultraphosphate anions with lithium. We describe the lithium ultraphosphates Li3P5O14 and Li4P6O17 based on extended layers and chains of phosphate, respectively. Li3P5O14 presents a complex structure containing infinite ultraphosphate layers with 12-membered rings that are stacked alternately with lithium polyhedral layers. Two distinct vacant tetrahedral sites were identified at the end of two distinct finite Li6O16 26– chains. Li4P6O17 features a new type of loop-branched chain defined by six PO4 3– tetrahedra. The ionic conductivities and electrochemical properties of Li3P5O14 were examined by impedance spectroscopy combined with DC polarization, NMR spectroscopy, and galvanostatic plating/stripping measurements. The structure of Li3P5O14 enables three-dimensional lithium migration that affords the highest ionic conductivity (8.5(5) × 10–7 S cm–1 at room temperature for bulk), comparable to that of commercialized LiPON glass thin film electrolytes, and lowest activation energy (0.43(7) eV) among all reported ternary Li–P–O phases. Both new lithium ultraphosphates are predicted to have high thermodynamic stability against oxidation, especially Li3P5O14, which is predicted to be stable to 4.8 V, significantly higher than that of LiPON and other solid electrolytes. The condensed phosphate units defining these ultraphosphate structures offer a new route to optimize the interplay of conductivity and electrochemical stability required, for example, in cathode coatings for lithium ion batteries.
