Synthesis and Free Radical Copolymerization of a Vinyl Monomer from Soybean Oil

Abstract: A one-step method that converts soybean oil into (acryloylamino)ethyl soyate, a new vinyl monomer of free radical polymerization, was developed. The synthesized monomer combines vinyl double bond (acryloyl functional group) and non-conjugated (isolated) double bonds of fatty acids. The double bond of the acryloyl group is reactive in a free radical chain polymerization that yields linear macromolecules containing isolated double bonds in side chains. Monomer reactivity ratios (r 1 , r 2 ) in copolymerization o… Show more

“…Hence, renewable resources are now receiving attention as raw materials for polymer production, mainly from the viewpoint of sustainability, but also because their characteristic structures often lead to unique bio‐based polymers with differentiated properties, which are difficult to obtain using simple petroleum‐based compounds and, therefore, are attractive in view of new high‐performance or functional features. [ 2,3 ] Among biorenewable raw materials, several vegetable oils have been proposed since they contain several reactive sites that can be chemically transformed to produce polymer precursors that mainly lead to the obtaining of thermoset polymers. [ 4–6 ] Traditionally, unsaturated vegetable oils are used in the coating industry, mainly as drying oils or to produce alkyd resins.…”
