Synthesis and properties of core-shell magnetic molecular imprinted polymers

The presence of pharmaceutical pollutant, doxycycline (DOC) in water and waste streams has negative impact on the environment. In this research, metal organic framework was synthesized and functionalized by potassium nickel ferrocyanide (KNiFC). After characterisation, the functionalized adsorbent was used for removal of DOC from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent containing 80% of KNiFC exhibited the high adsorption capacity of 100 mg/g. The adsorption process was kinetically fast and the equilibration was established within 30 min. The used adsorbent retained 90% of its initial capacity after regeneration. The magnetic susceptibility of the adsorbent measured by VSM technique was 35 emu/g and sufficient for separation of the used adsorbent by external magnetic field. Isotherm models including Langmuir, Freundlich, Tempkin, Redlich‐Peterson, and Sips were applied to correlate the experimental equilibrium data. To evaluate the fitness of the isotherm equations error analysis methods, residual root mean square error and average relative error were used.

In the study, four different semiempirical algorithms, modified neglect of diatomic overlap, a reparameterization of Austin Model 1, complete neglect of differential overlap and typed neglect of differential overlap, have been applied for the energy optimization of template, monomer, and template-monomer complexes of imprinted polymers. For phosmet-, estrone-, and metolcarb-imprinted polymers, the binding energies of template-monomer complexes were calculated and the docking configures were assessed in different molar ratio of template/monomer. It was found that two algorithms were not suitable for calculating the binding energy in template-monomers complex system. For the other algorithms, the obtained optimum molar ratio of template and monomers were consistent with the experimental results. Therefore, two algorithms have been selected and applied for the preparation of enrofloxacin-imprinted polymers. Meanwhile using a different molar ratio of template and monomer, we prepared imprinted polymers and nonimprinted polymers, and evaluated the adsorption to template. It was verified that the experimental results were in good agreement with the modeling results. As a result, the semiempirical algorithm had certain feasibility in designing the preparation of imprinted polymers.

Molecular surface-imprinted polymers nanoparticles encapsulating magnetite modified with oleic acid, for recognition of salicylic acid was prepared by three-step miniemulsion polymerization. The important factors including polymerization process, solvents, miniemulsifying approaches, and co-stabilizer have been investigated to obtain magnetic molecular imprinting polymers (MMIPs) nanoparticles (NPs) with high saturation magnetization (Ms), regular morphology, and good monodispersion. The results showed that the amount of magnetite encapsulated in MMIPs NPs was 43.4 wt% and Ms was 33.584 emu/g. Thus, MMIPs NPs could be separated easily within 2 minutes by an external magnetic field. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed MMIPs NPs were of regular sphere with core-shell structure, where magnetite NPs were uniformly encapsulated in homogeneous polymer shells. The average diameter of MMIPs NPs was 98 nm with RSD of 6.6%. Good recognition and high loading of target molecule were achieved by MMIPs NPs in batch rebinding tests.
