Synthesis and properties of sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone sulfone) copolymer

Abstract: A series of novel sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone sulfone)s copolymer (SPAEKS-x) were synthesized by polycondensation reaction of commercial 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane, 4,4 0 -dichlorodiphenylsulfone, 4,4 0 -dihydroxydiphenylether, and 3,3 0 disulfonate-4,4 0 -difluorobenzophenone. The degree of sulfonation was realized by controlling quantities of the sulfonated monomer. The structure of SPAEKS-x was confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared instrument. The tough,… Show more

“…Disulfonated 4,4′-dichlorodiphenylsulfone (SDCDPS) was synthesized using the published process. 27 30 As the membrane matrix, the sulfonated degree of SPAES should be controlled in a reasonable range. In our research, the sulfonated degree is about 30%, without losing the mechanical properties of polymer while containing a certain amount of metal cations to keep the compatibility, the yield of SDCDPS was 63%.…”

“…In our research, the sulfonated degree is about 30%, without losing the mechanical properties of polymer while containing a certain amount of metal cations to keep the compatibility, the yield of SDCDPS was 63%. 28,30 The synthesis of SPAES was accomplished by nucleophilic aromatic substitution polycondensation. A typical method previously reported in our laboratory was as followed: First, SDCDPS (0.00525 mol), DCDPS (0.02975 mol), 4,4′-biphenol (0.035 mol), K 2 CO 3 (0.042 mol), toluene (23 mL), and TMS (45 mL) were all added into a 100 mL three-necked round-bottomed flask equipped with a Dean-Stark trap.…”

“…Aromatic polyesters constitute an important class of engineering thermoplastics with excellent mechanical properties, environmental stability, and solvent resistance, properties that allow them to be widely applied in various fields. 1 5 However, the application of such polymers is inherently constrained by their poor solubility in common organic solvents and glass transition temperatures ( T g s); thus, these properties must be improved. 6 8 Once the solubility is limited, few techniques for thin film formation exist.…”

“…However, high methanol permeability of Nafion makes it unsuitable for use in DMFCs and encourages the development of alternative proton conductive polymers. 11,12 Acid-functionalized aromatic hydrocarbon polymers, such as sulfonated poly(arylene sulfone)s, 13,14 sulfonated poly(arylene ketone)s, 15,16 sulfonated polyimides, 17,18 and sulfonated poly(benzimidazole)s, 19,20 have been investigated as substitutes for Nafion due to their high thermal, excellent mechanical property, high proton conductivity, and acceptable cost.…”
