Synthesis and Structural Characterization of La1−xAxMnO2.5 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) Phases: Mapping the Variants of the Brownmillerite Structure

Abstract: Analysis of the structural parameters of phases that adopt brownmillerite-type structures suggests the distribution of the different complex ordering schemes adopted within this structure type can be rationalized by considering both the size of the separation between the tetrahedral layers and the tetrahedral chain distortion angle. A systematic study using structural data obtained from La1−x A x MnO2,5 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca,) phases, prepared by the topotactic reduction of the analogous La1−x A x MnO3 perovskite ph… Show more

“…These arguments were then used to construct a "structure map" relating the observed phase of different brownmillerites to these factors, followed by a classification of several known compounds into this scheme. 36 Although these observations have been key in building an understanding of structural trends in brownmillerite oxides, and are corroborated by some recently synthesized brownmillerite phases (such as Ca 2 Cr 2 O 5 ), 37 discrepancies in this structure map show there are additional effects which should be considered. Ca 2 FeCoO 5 and Ca 2 Co 2 O 5 , for example, both display the P bcm rather than the structure-map predicted P nma geometry.…”

“…18,19 In the case of strontium-doped lanthanum manganite, this phase has been observed only upon reduction with hydrides or upon exposure to 50% hydrogen gas. 20,21 Such extreme reducing conditions are not encountered under typical thermochemical cycling conditions and accordingly the Brownmillerite phase is not anticipated to form as part of the fuel generation process.…”
