Synthesis and structural characterization of a silver complex of a mixed-donor N-heterocyclic carbene linked cyclophane

Abstract: The synthesis of a dicationic imidazolium-linked cyclophane and a dimeric silver-N-heterocyclic carbene complex, that is the first silver complex with a N-heterocyclic carbene ligand involved in a pi-bonding interaction, is reported.

“…Unfortunately the bis-chelated platinum NHC complexes are not stable under the reaction conditions used for the palladium complexes and attempts are under way to better stabilize the platinum complexes. Since we first reported the bischelated palladium NHC complexes several other reports appeared in the literature [204][205][206][207], showing that it is an area of current interest. Several experimental and theoretical projects in our group are currently directed towards the goal of solving the obvious mechanistic questions and we hope to report them soon.…”

“…In dealing with chelating bis-NHC ligands, alkyl chains, [21Ϫ23] planar aromatics [24Ϫ28] or chiral binaphthyl [29] linkers are normally used. Macrocyclic compounds such as cyclophanes [30,31] have come into focus recently and may provide new and interesting applications.…”

“…On the basis of structural information, high -metal interaction between metals and carbene ligands has been reported [109,110]. Hu et al [111,112] used the recent development of modern DFTs and corresponding computer programs to compute the electronic structure of the synthesized NHC-metal complexes, and they evidenced that NHCs can accept electron density from electronrich group 11 metal atoms, through a d → * backdonation scheme.…”
