“…The structure of the (Sr n+1 M n O 3nÀ1 )-(Cu 2 S 2 ) (M = Sc, Fe, Ni and Cu) family of compounds (Zhu & Hor, 1997;Otzschi et al, 1999) can also be described as an intergrowth of perovskite-and¯uorite-type layers. Recently, a niobium oxysul®de, namely La 10.8 Nb 5 S 10 O 20 , was reported to have an intergrowth structure in which Ln 2 S 2 rock-salt-type layers alternate with a complex mixed lanthanum and niobium oxysul®de layer (Boyer-Candalen & Meerschaut, 2000). In a quest for a much simpler intergrowth structure in the La/Nb/S/ O system, we have found the title compound, La 2 Nb 3 S 2 O 8 , as a by-product.…”
