Synthesis, biological efficiency evaluation and application of sodium alginate-based polyurethane dispersions using cycloaliphatic isocyanate, as antibacterial textile coating

Abstract: In the present project sodium alginate-based polyurethane dispersions were synthesized by two shot processes, using isophorone diisocyanate, polyethylene glycol (Mn-300), dimethylol propionic acid as internal emulsifier along with other reagents including triethylamine and dibutyltindilaurate catalyst. Molecular characterization was performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Physical properties were observed and samples were found to be translucent … Show more

“…Alginate is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS), being nontoxic, nonantigenic, satisfactorily biocompatible, and sufficiently biodegradable (Lee & Mooney, 2012). As a result of its physicochemical properties, alginate is used for a large variety of technical applications, as a coating material in textile industry (Misbah et al, 2019) or as a disintegrating agent for tablets. Alginate is also commonly found in cosmetic (Adli et al, 2020), pharmaceutical, medical (Shi et al, 2020) Matrix for encapsulation of volatiles constituents.…”

“…Alginate is as acidic linear polysaccharide adopted in several applications as a coating material in textile industry, [27,28] or as a disintegrating agent for tablets. It is, also, used in cosmetic, [27,29] pharmaceutical, and medical application, [27,30] as well as in food industries as thickener and stabilizer [27,31] .…”

“…Bacteria form biofilms both on biotic and abiotic surfaces. Biofilms help bacteria in spreading infections by preventing them from antibiotics and the host immune system (Maqbool et al, 2019) Quorum sensing (QS) is an intercellular communication process adopted by both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria which is based on the secretion and detection of external signal molecules (Misbah Bhatti et al, 2021). In the form of biofilm, bacteria communicate with each other via quorum sensing.…”
