Synthesis, characterization and evaluation of a quadripolymer with low molecular weight as a water based drilling fluid viscosity reducer at high temperature (245 °C)

Abstract: To construct an ultra‐high temperature stable drilling mud with a relatively low viscosity, a new viscosity‐reducing additive was synthesized and evaluated. This additive is a quadripolymer of acrylic acid (AA), 2‐acryl‐amido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propane sulfonic acid (AMPS), methyl acrylate (MA) and dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (DDAC) with low molecular weight synthesized by free radical polymerization, and its general molecular composition was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Thermal gravime… Show more

“…The Z-average molecular weight (M z ) of Driscal D Polymer is three orders of magnitude higher than that of LDMS. In the chemical category, low-molecular-weight polymers [ 28 ] are polymers with small relative molecular weights ranging from 1 × 10 3 to 6 × 10 3 . LDMS satisfies the relative molecular weight requirements of low-molecular-weight polymers, indicating that the low-molecular-weight filtrate reducer LDMS was synthesized successfully.…”

“…The VR-H viscosity reducer also formed a polymer complex with polyacrylamide in the water-based drilling fluid system, which can reduce the adsorption bridging effect of polyacrylamide on clay particles and the interaction between hydrolyzed polyacrylamide molecules, so that the structural viscosity and liquid viscosity of the drilling fluid are decreased. Therefore, VR-H can keep the solid particles in drilling fluid well dispersed, prevent the passivation and aggregation of clay at high temperature, reduce the friction between solid particles, and thus reduce the viscosity of the drilling fluid [ 26 ].…”

“…Drilling fluid performance of the density 1.06g/cm 3 The experimental results show that the anti-soluble salt (NaCl and CaCl 2 ) pollution capability proves to be perfect in the organo-silica system. The organo-silica high-temperature-resistant water-based drilling fluid system can resist 6%NaCl, 0.5%CaCl 2 and 15% cuttings under the high temperature of 220℃ for 16h.…”
