Synthesis, characterization, and rheological studies of methacrylic acid–ethyl acrylate–diallyl phthalate copolymers

Abstract: Copolymerization of methacrylic acid (MAA) and ethyl acrylate (EA) was performed by the emulsion polymerization technique in the presence of a mixture of ionic and nonionic emulsifiers, at 85°C, using potassium persulfate as initiator (0.16 wt % of monomer). The molar ratio of MAA : EA varied between 44 : 56 and 54 : 46 in the monomer feed. Copolymers of MAA and EA were synthesized by incorporating diallyl phthalate (DAP) with varying concentrations (0 -1.7 mol % of total monomer) in the feed. A copolymer late… Show more

“…To put our results on ASE syntheses in context, we note that Bajaj et al26, 27 synthesized P(MAA‐EA) latex particles with various weight ratios of MAA/EA ranging from 53/47 to 83/17. They carried out semicontinuous emulsion polymerization at 50 °C with a preemulsion of MAA and EA stabilized with SDS and Hydroxide AAO (a nonionic surfactant produced by Hico Products), initiated with a redox system of potassium persulfate/sodium metabisulfate.…”

“…Alkali‐swellable emulsions (ASE) have a broad industrial use as thickeners in water‐borne latex coatings, paints, and adhesives 1–3. These dispersions are generally based on copolymers of methacrylic acid (MAA) and ethyl acrylate P(MAA‐EA).…”

“…Emulsion polymerization was carried out using a previously reported method with some modifications ( 7 ). Polymerization was performed in a 1 L capacity three necked glass reactor equipped with an overhead mechanical stirrer, a reflux condenser, a thermometer, and two dropping funnels through a Y-shaped connector.…”

“…The observed FTIR band positions and their assignments are presented in Table 2. In pure film a strong band observed at 1452 cm −1 has been assigned to bending mode of vibration corresponding to CH 3 group, while another strong band observed at 1492 cm −1 has been attributed to C-H bending of CH 2 [20,21]. The FTIR absorption bands attributed to carbonyl stretching of the acid and ester units have appeared as weak bands at 1601 cm −1 range [17].…”
