Synthesis, Characterization, and Study of the Thermal Properties of New Poly(arylene ether 1,3,4-oxadiazole)s

Abstract: A series of new poly(arylene ether 1,3,4-oxadiazole)s has been prepared by nucleophilic displacement of aromatic dihalides with aromatic potassium bisphenates in diphenyl sulfone at elevated temperatures. The polymers, characterized by elemental and infrared analysis, GPC, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction, had inherent viscosity from 0.3 to 0.7 dL/g, were obtained in yields higher than 85%, show good solubility in various organic solvents, and had excellent thermal stability as shown by 10% weight loss tempera… Show more

“…TGA curves are presented in Figure 2. The thermal stability of the present polymers is very similar to that of related polyoxadiazoles which contain pendent phenoxy groups, 19 but slightly lower (by approximately 40-50 C) than that of poly(1,3,4-oxadiazole-ether)s 20 and poly(1,3,4-oxadiazole-amide)s which contain pendent phthalimide groups. 5,21 That proves that the ester groups in the present polymers are more vulnerable to thermal degradation.…”

“…Consequently, the polymers display superior melt processing behaviors, solubility, adhesion, hydrolytic stability and thermal oxidative. Furthermore, it can also show moderate high glass transition temperatures and tough mechanical properties as well as liquid crystalline properties which may lead them to be applied in microelectronics fabrications and other applications [3537]. Polyethers show also great ability for film production that can be used in ulta-filtration membranes gas separation and aerospace vehicles [38].…”

“…Detailed procedure for synthesis of precursors, variationaly phenyl-substituted monomer and Polymers prepared by a modification of the published procedure are outlined in Scheme 1 [18][19][20][21][22]. The production of PAEs (P2-C~P4-C) is achieved via the nucleophilic displacement of fluorine atoms on bis(4-fluoro-3-trifluoromethyl)-n''-phenyl-quinquephenyl monomers (7)(8)(9).…”

“…[1][2][3][4] Remarkable thermal stability, high optical transmittance, high glass transition temperature (Tg), low dielectric constant, thermo-oxidative stability, good processability, stable anti-hydrolysis and chemical resistance have become the essential properties of PAEs. [5][6][7][8][9][10].…”
