“…(2008). E64, m172 [https://doi.org/10.1107/S1600536807065841] The croconate C 5 O 5 2anion has attracted increasing attention in recent years because this polydentate ligand gave rise to a variety of interesting complexes (Coronado et al, 2007;Chen et al, 2005;Maji et al, 2003;Wang et al, 2002;Sletten et al, 1998). Typically, the C 5 O 5 2anion can serve as a terminal bidentate ligand and a bridging ligand utilizing more than two O atoms for coordination.…”

“…Previous reports reveal that croconate is a polydent ligand (Chen et al, 2005, Maji et al, 2003, Wang et al, 2002, Sletten et al, 1998. According to the concept of 'molecular self-organization′ and 'molecular engineering′, transition metal croconates associated with another ligand such as terpyridine (Castro et al 2002), bis((bis(2-pyridylcarbonyl) amido (Maji et al, 2003), 2,2′-bipyridine (Castro et al, 1992) or the tetrakis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine (Carranza et al 2004) show interesting properties in magnetism, biochemistry, catalyst et al…”

“…Interestingly, the bond-length pattern of the croconate ligand in coordination compounds is intermediate between the neutral croconate molecule and the dianion in its salts. In [Fe 2 (bpym) 2 (C 5 O 5 )(H 2 O) 4 ]Á2H 2 O (bippy = 2,2 0 -bipyrimidine), the bond lengths [C-C = 1.449 (3)-1.484 (3) Å and C-O = 1.236 (3)-1.265 (3) Å ] are comparable to those of the dianion (Sletten et al, 1998) (Castro et al, 1994), the geometry of the croconate ligand approximates to that of the title molecule; thus some charge-transfer should occur from the anionic ligand to the metal. Therefore the bond-length pattern within the croconate ligand in a metal complex may serve as a useful indication of the charge transfer.…”
