Synthesis gas production with simultaneous CO2 capturing and consuming: Application of chemical looping combustion by employing Fe45‐Al2O3 and Mn40/Mg–ZrO2 oxygen carriers

Abstract: In this study, thermal coupling of chemical looping combustion (CLC) and dry reforming of methane (DR) via employment of Fe45-Al 2 O 3 and Mn40/Mg-ZrO 2 oxygen carriers (OCs) were investigated. The main aim of this configuration (CLC-DR) is the prevention of large CO 2 emissions to the atmosphere by CLC and simultaneous consumption of the captured gas to synthesis gas through a DR reaction. For this purpose, a steady state one-dimensional heterogeneous catalytic reaction model is applied to analyze the perform… Show more

“…One of the most challenging issues of the present communities is the growing emission of the greenhouse gases including CO 2 as a chief supplier and the resulting global warming. , In today’s world, the concentration of CO 2 in the atmosphere has raised by 140% in comparison with the preindustrial era, due to the industrial growth and technological advances. Conveyance vehicles, heat production facilities, and power plant allocate 67% of the worldwide CO 2 releases .…”

“…Recently, the chemical looping process using CO 2 as the oxidant has become highly attractive due to the serious global environmental problems caused by large CO 2 emissions . In 2011, Najera et al extended chemical looping combustion (CLC) and proposed chemical looping dry reforming (CLDR, Figure a) by replacing air with CO 2 as the oxidant.…”

“…The additional air oxidation not only completely recovered the OC to its original state but also turned the net endothermic CLDR process with only CO 2 oxidation into a net exothermic process. Subsequently, many researchers worldwide have investigated the CLDR process using different OCs, and these reports were focused on the total oxidation (CO 2 and H 2 O) of methane for sequestration‐ready CO 2 capture in the reducer. Recently, More et al applied chemical looping using a CO 2 oxidant to produce synthesis gas from CH 4 with Fe‐ and Ni‐supported CeO 2 OCs.…”
