Synthesis, Molecular Structure and Antibacterial Activity of Benzylmethyl-4-Methyl-3-Thiosemicarbazone

Abstract: A novel Schiff base, benzylmethyl-4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (BMM) derived from benzylmethylketone and 4-methylthiosemicarbazide was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic methods (IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR) and physical means. The single crystal structure analysis of the Schiff base reveals that it crystallizes in a monoclinic system in the P2 1 /c space group. BMM revealed moderate antibacterial activity on three bacterial strains with diameter zone of inhibition of 16 mm (E. coli),… Show more

“…The vanillin thiosemicarbazone and its cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes were characterized through elemental analysis, molar conductivity, magnetic moment, electronic spectra, infrared spectra, 1 H, 13 C NMR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, powder XRD analysis and SEM analysis. Based on the data, an octahedral geometry was assigned for the cobalt and nickel complex, square planar geometry for copper complex and a tetrahedral geometry for zinc complex.…”

“…10,11 Earlier reports show that their metal complexes, due to their ability to form stable chelates with essential metal ions, exhibit enhanced activity. [12][13][14][15] Certain thiosemicarbazones complexes were reported to have applications as nanoprecursor. 16,17 The present study reports the synthesis, characterization and biological activities of cobalt, nickel, copper and zinc complexes of vanillin-4-methyl-4-phenyl-3thiosemicarbazone.…”

“…The presence of citral could always explain this activity. We insist on the fact that these noted bactericidal activities relate to the compounds obtained during this work, because thiosemicarbazone compounds according to the works of [36] have revealed very interesting bactericidal properties.…”

“…Among hemi-synthesized molecules, only the synthesis of CThio had been reported in the literature from commercial citral [36]. To our knowledge, it was during this work that compounds CPthio had been synthesized for the first time by ours methods.…”

“…Thiosemicarbazones are useful in the medicinal and pharmaceutical fields because of their great significant pharmacological properties such as antibacterial [2] [3] [4], antifungal [2], anti-HIV [5] [6] [7] anticancer [8] [9], antineoplastic [10], anti-inflammatory [11], tuberclostatic [12], antimalarial [13] [14] and their variable bonding nature. In continuation with our earlier work on heterocyclic thiosemicarbazone derivatives [15], the present paper reports on the synthesis and antibacterial studies of 1-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-4-methylthiosemicarbazone (MBT).…”
