Synthesis of a Highly Efficient Multifunctional Copper (II)‐Pyridyl Complex for Adsorption and Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes

Abstract: A new copper (II) pyridyl complex CP1, has been synthesized for adsorption as well as photocatalytic degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RhB) dyes and characterized through FT-IR, LC-MS, FE-SEM, TEM and EPR studies. The density functional theoretical (DFT) study was performed to determine the mode of binding of Cu II ions with ligand 1 to form complex CP1. Photoluminescence study in solid state suggests that CP1 could act as potential green light emitter. The adsorption of MB and RhB dyes on th… Show more

“…The sulfhydryl (–C–S+C) group in MB was reported to be easily attacked by ˙OH radicals and converted into the sulfoxide (–C–SO–C) group. 71,72 The formation of the intermediate a was confirmed by the fragment m / z 272. Then the intermediate a was attacked continuously by active species and converted into the sulfonic acid intermediate ( c , m / z 231).…”

“…Then the intermediate a was attacked continuously by active species and converted into the sulfonic acid intermediate ( c , m / z 231). 72 Two degradation pathways were proposed for the sulfonic acid intermediate. One pathway is that it transforms into 2-amino-5-(dimethylamino) benzene sulfonic acid ( g , m / z 217) and subsequently converts to benzene sulfonic acid ( h ).…”

“…The corresponding reaction kinetic studies indicate that the photocatalytic reactions involving 1 and 2 were in accordance with a pseudo-first-order model: ln( C 0 / C t ) = kt . 47,48 As shown in Fig. 7d, ln( C 0 / C t ) versus time t showed a linear relationship, and the apparent rate constants k of 1 and 2 were evaluated to be 0.02115 and 0.01656 min −1 , respectively.…”

“…However, degradation of organic dyes present in the e uent water completely using catalysts and visible light or ultraviolet radiation completely into innocuous products has proven to be an e cient method of e uent water treatment. This is due to the ability of this approach to degrade the organic dye molecules in a simple, environmentally benign, sustainable and cost-effective manner (Abdelrahman et al 2019;Jain et al 2019). These methods mostly explored the usage of conventional semiconductor nanomaterials and their modi cations for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes (Kang et These metal complexes are found to be a good alternative to the photocatalysts based on gold, silver, ruthenium and platinum in terms of economy.…”
