Synthesis of magnetic polymeric ionic liquid nanocomposites by the Radziszewski reaction

Abstract: The application of the Radziszewski reaction is proposed for the first time for the synthesis of magnetic polymeric ionic liquids. After their characterization, the sorption ability of the nanocomposites towards acidic compounds have been evaluated.

“…have been used for the introduction of IL-like units and the creation of imidazolium rings from polymer-bound amines has been reported. 101 For inorganic supports, free hydroxyl groups on the surface are used for the attachment, employing sol-gel approaches and alkoxyorganosilyl derivatives containing the desired IL-like functionality or its precursor. 68,92,93, 94 The presence on the surface of a solid of IL-like fragments can be used to introduce an additional IL layer reducing its potential leaching.…”

“…Thus functionalized magnetic nanoparticles were prepared and evaluated for the extraction of preservatives in vegetables 39 , as adsorbent for organophosphorus pesticides from tea drinks 14 , or for the analysis of some drugs in pharmaceutical formulations, in plasma and urine 40 . While many research work concerning the manufacturing of these functionalized nanoparticles are based on multi-step reactions, Castro-Grijalba et al 41 used with success the one-step Debus-Radziszewski reaction involving magnetic nanoparticles coated with amine groups. The resulting materials were evaluated as sorbent for different non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as salicylic acid, ketoprofen and naproxen present in saliva samples.…”

“…The majority of PILs employed in analytical applications are polycations based on IL monomers containing vinyl‐ or allyl‐groups within their cationic‐counterpart [10]. Imidazolium‐based PILs can also be generated using the Radziszewski reaction, which involves the reaction between a diamine, glyoxal, and formaldehyde in acidic media [11]. MILs possess a paramagnetic component in the IL structure [12,13].…”
