Synthesis of Platinum Nanoparticles by Reductive Crystallization Using Polyethyleneimine

Abstract: Sub-10-nm-sized Pt nanoparticles were synthesized by reducing Pt ions with NaBH 4 , with the addition of polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a protective reagent. Well-dispersed Pt nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution were successfully produced. When lowering the pH of the PEI solution, cubic and tetrahedral nanoparticles were observed, while at a higher pH, only spherical nanoparticles were produced. In addition, by selecting a suitable concentration of PEI, the protective reagent itself can reduce Pt ions to… Show more

“…The most common routes for synthesis of PtNPs in colloidal suspension is through chemical reduction 21 , microemulsions 22 , green synthesis 23 and gamma irradiation 24 by the reduction of precursors, such as Pt 4 + or Pt 2 + ions in the presence of coating agent. In order to control size and morphology, polyacrylate and polyvinylpyrrolidone were used 25 ; however, the use of NaBH4 is related as a faster reducing agent employed for the synthesis and control of size 26 .…”

“…The higher amount of catalytic center could lead to the higher catalytic oxidation of TMB and obvious change. Pt NPs (12.9–70.7 nm) have been successfully prepared by PEI molecules with molecular weights from 300, 1200, and 10,000 . However, the sizes of aforementioned Pt NPs are relatively big, and the stability of prepared NPs is not investigated.…”

Thus, it is still necessary to obtain smaller Pt NPs with high stability in solution.…”

“…These methods rely on generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), solvated electrons, as well as UV radiation and heat. All these factors facilitate formation of NPs through reduction of metallic precursor compounds, eliminating the need for additional reducing agents, such as hydrazine [ 13 ] or sodium borohydrate [ 14 ]. To the best of our knowledge, only a few research groups have attempted to synthesize PtNPs by APP [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ].…”
