Syntheses are reported for a variety of structures used in a continuation of our studies of the combining site of the monoclonal anti-I Ma antibody. These structures include the N-acetyl, N-formyl, and N-pivalyl derivatives of methyl β-D-lactosaminide, the ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, and isobutyl β-glycosides of N-acetyllactosamine and the βDGal(1 → 4)βDGlcNAc(1 → 6)-, βDGal(1 → 4)βDGlcNH2(1 → 6)-, βDGal(1 → 4) βDGlcNCOCF3(1 → 6)-, and βDGlc(1 → 4)βDGlcNAc(1 → 6)-derivatives of 1,2;3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-α-D-galactopyranose. Also, preparations of 6-deoxy-βDGal(1 → 4)βDGlcNAc(1 → 6)α,βDGal and βDGlcNAc(1 → 6)βDGal(1 → 4) βDGlcNAcOCH3 are described.
