Synthesis, Structural Characterization, Hirschfeld Surface Analysis, Density Functional Theory, and Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction Activity of a New Ca(II) Complex with a Bis-Schiff Base Ligand

Xishi Tai,

Lihua Wang

Abstract: A new bis-Schiff base (L) Ca(II) complex, CaL, was synthesized by the reaction of calcium perchlorate tetrahydrate, 1,3-diamino-2-hydroxypropane, and 2-formyl phenoxyacetic acid in an ethanol–water (v:v = 2:1) solution and characterized by IR, UV-vis, TG-DTA, and X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis. The structural analysis indicates that the Ca(II) complex crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P121/n1, and the Ca(II) ions are six-coordinated with four O atoms (O8, O9, O11, O12, or O1, O2, O4… Show more

“…Photocatalysis technology has emerged as a promising solution for converting CO 2 into crucial chemical fuels such as methane (CH 4 ). Although numerous studies have successfully converted CO 2 into clean fuels, including methanol [2][3][4][5], formic acid [6][7][8][9], and methane [10][11][12][13] via photocatalysis, the yields of these products remain low and are inadequate for industrial-scale applications.…”

“…Finally, the population's quality of life is significantly reduced due to damage to Earth's ecosystem. Therefore, finding an environmentally friendly alternative to solve the energy problem is urgently required [8][9][10][11][12]. With its plentiful reservoirs, high specific energy, good combustion characteristics, non-toxicity, non-hazardous, and non-polluting qualities, hydrogen is an extremely effective and clean energy source.…”

“…However, solar energy cannot meet the needs of industries due to its naturally low energy flow density. The chemical conversion of solar photochemical storage and preservation is considered one of the most promising ways to use solar energy [5,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. Using photocatalysts to produce hydrogen from water splitting with sunlight is anticipated to enable energy storage, addressing the present energy crisis and environmental issues [15,16].…”
