Synthesis, Structure, and Surface Adsorption Characteristics of a Polynuclear MnII,IV–YbIII Complex

Abstract: The controlled adsorption of polynuclear coordination compounds with specific structural and electronic characteristics on surfaces is crucial for the prospective implementation of molecule−surface interfaces into practical electronic devices. From this perspective, a neutral 3d,4f-coordination cluster, where L•SMe − is a Schiff base, has been synthesized and fully characterized and its adsorption on two different solid substrates, gold and graphite, has been studied. The mixed-valence compound with a bilayere… Show more

“…A detailed structure description for the manganese−ytterbium complex is given in [21]. This structure was used as the initial geometry and further optimized for the manganese−dysprosium complex using the density functional theory approach implemented in the Amsterdam Density Functional (ADF 2019.01) software (see chapter 5 for details).…”

“…Especially, ultraprecise surfaces may grant access to yet-undiscovered opportunities for POMs in molecular electronics. Since we know that the adsorption characteristics of polynuclear coordination clusters on metallic substrates can deviate strongly from those on semimetallic ones, we are establishing and monitoring self-assembly processes of POMs on lithographically structured substrates by scanning probe techniques in order to achieve integration of POMs as active switching units in memory crossbar arrays. Such self-assembly processes can also be supported by organic templates on metallic surfaces, which offer additional possibilities for a controlled POM adsorption.…”

“…3d-4f mixed metal complexes have attracted considerable interest because they have applications, such as catalysis, 1,2 luminescence, 3,4 molecular magnetism and molecular electronic devices. [5][6][7] Particularly, single molecule magnets (SMMs) have been heavily exploited due to their potential applications in high-density information storage devices, quantum computers and spintronics. [8][9][10][11] The central goal aimed at designing highperformance SMMs is to improve their blocking temperature (T B ), which could be realized by improving the effective energy barrier (U eff ) of SMMs.…”
