Synthesis, structure, electrochemistry and electrocatalysis of a new copper(II) complex: [Cu2(bpp)(μ-CH3COO)4] · 2H2O [bpp = 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane]

Abstract: A new coordination polymer [Cu 2 (bpp)(l-CH 3 -COO) 4 ] Á 2H 2 O [bpp = 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane] (1), has been synthesized under open-air mild reaction conditions, and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that each two Cu(II) ions are bridged by four l-CH 3 COO -anions to form a dinuclear structure unit, the adjacent dinuclear units are further linked by bpp ligands to construct a one-dimensional (1-D) chain structure. … Show more

“…The rational design and synthesis of coordination polymers has became a flourishing research area because of potential applications in magnetism, ion exchange, catalysis, gas separation, and electrical conductivity [1][2][3]. From the point of view of crystal engineering, the construction of coordination polymers with desired properties requires careful selection of the organic ligands [4].…”

“…Efficiency of different forms of copper ions nanoparticle, composites and complexes have been demonstrated for numerous industrial applications involving electrochemical reduction of CO 2 in fuels , methanol and ethanol oxidations , reductions of some important environmental pollutants , oxygen , hydrogen evolution reactions and electrochemical sensing of peroxides . However, practical applications of copper compounds are limited and unattractive due to poor selectivity as a result of interferences of some redox peaks of copper (Cu 3+/2+ , Cu 2+/1 and Cu 1+/0 ) with targeted compounds and or atoms and challenges of immobilization of a stable copper complexes on solid electrode without electrochemical fouling on immobilized solid electrodes . Appreciable redox activity and stability of copper complex on the solid electrode could be achieved in basic media, yet the neutral medium is characterized prominently by fouling of solid electrode .…”

“…Recently, there has been an increasing interest in supramolecular metal-organic complexes built from flexible carboxylate ligands, and several examples with interesting structural and physical properties have been documented [11,12]. Although distinct progress has been achieved, strategies for the construction of such supramolecular metal-organic complexes are still in development [13].…”
