System-level Study on Synergism and Antagonism of Active Ingredients in Traditional Chinese Medicine by Using Molecular Imprinting Technology

Abstract: In this work, synergism and antagonism among active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) were studied at system-level by using molecular imprinting technology. Reduning Injection (RDNI), a TCM injection, was widely used to relieve fever caused by viral infection diseases in China. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) synthesized by sol-gel method were used to separate caffeic acid (CA) and analogues from RDNI without affecting other compounds. It can realize the preparative scale separation. The … Show more

“…This is not however a unique challenge and all “biological systems are extremely complex and have emergent properties that cannot explained, or even predicted, by studying their individual parts” (Van Regenmortel, 2004 ). Emergent properties have been demonstrated in the networks of biological signaling pathways (Bhalla and Iyengar, 1999 ); in system-level study of traditional Chinese medicine (Chen et al, 2014 ), and in microbial communities (Wintermute and Silver, 2010 ; Chiu et al, 2014 ). To adequately explain the biological complexity present in plants and their interactions with the environment, Lüttge ( 2012 ) and Bertolli et al ( 2014 ) emphasize that classic reductionist biology/chemistry is indeed insufficient.…”

“…30 Antagonistic effects are caused by the competitive binding of the same compound in the infusion in combination with the same target protein pathway. 37 The α-glucosidase enzyme is an enzyme that plays an important role in the breakdown of carbohydrates in human. It works by hydrolyzing carbohydrates, releasing glucose that causes the increasing of post prandial glucose in the blood.…”

“…Moreover, to offer potential clients seamless healthcare experiences, telehealth, telemedicine and other technology-based health solutions should be effectively integrated Chinese medicine as a tourism recoverydrawcard in current TCM systems so potential clients can communicate with TCM doctors and access healthcare in a timely, cost-effective manner regardless of whether clients reside in China or elsewhere (Chen et al, 2014(Chen et al, , 2015Li and Su, 2008;Litscher, 2020). Advanced TCM-centred technologies could also alleviate physician burdensolutions such as robot-controlled acupuncture are already available (Lan and Litscher, 2019).…”
