System performance and microbial community succession in a partial nitrification biofilm reactor in response to salinity stress

Abstract: The system performance and microbial community succession in a partial nitrification biofilm reactor in response to salinity stress was conducted. It was found that the NH-N removal efficiency decreased from 98.4% to 42.0% after salinity stress increased to 20 g/L. Specific oxygen uptake rates suggested that AOB activity was more sensitive to the stress of salinity than that of NOB. Protein and polysaccharides contents showed an increasing tendency in both LB-EPS and TB-EPS after the salinity exposure. Moreove… Show more

“…The types of substances secreted determine the strength of these biofilms against salinity stress. High salinity can lead to disruption of biofilms produced through effects on the microbial metabolism and physiological processes ( Bassin et al, 2011 ; Li et al, 2018 ). Curtobacterium albidum strain SRV4 alleviated salinity stress in rice plant due to production of EPS in addition to nitrogen (N 2 ) fixation, IAA production, and ACC deaminase activity ( Vimal et al, 2019 ).…”

“…In addition, nitrite reductase is more sensitive than nitrate reductase to environment changes [57], thus leading to NO 2 − -N accumulation. Table S2 compares the NH 4 + -N removal efficiency by salinity injection [19,34,48,[58][59][60][61][62][63]. [48].…”

“…Researches had found that the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes can reach 46% and 51% in PNA and Proteobacteria was associated with ammonia oxidation and nitrite accumulation (Wei et al, 2018). Heterotrophic bacteria such as Chloroflexi and Bacteroidetes could consume polysaccharides and proteins in EPS to reduce nitrate to nitrite and provide substrate for anammox bacteria (Lawson et al, 2017; Li et al, 2018). Chloroflexi can also promote the aggregation of microorganisms (Liu et al, 2017).…”
