Systematic characterisation and seed oil analysis in candidate plus trees of biodiesel plant, Pongamia pinnata

Abstract: Candidate plus trees (CPTs) of Pongamia pinnata, a potential biodiesel plant occurring across 10 locations in North Guwahati, were identified based on morphological markers (vegetative and reproductive) using combined analysis over locations. Identified CPTs were then multiplied using seed propagation technique in a nursery bed. The performance of the candidate trees with respect to seed and pod traits, the two most important characters with regard to oil, were evaluated using CROPSTAT software for inferring p… Show more

“…Seed oil content variation is more widely reported not only in annual crops but also in a wide variety of trees borne oil seed (Divakara et al, 2010;Sunil et al, 2010). These findings are in agreement with Kaushik et al, 2007and Mukta et al, 2009. Kesari et al (2008 also observed seed oil variability in different progenies of P. pinnata.…”

“…It can also play a role in rural economy by generating huge manpower employment during various stages of its cultivation as well as during downstream processing (Shrinivasa 2001). However, while utilizing these species as a source of biodiesel, there is a further need for research into various areas of production (Kesari et al 2008). To increase the biodiesel production it's important to have unlimited feed stocks of Pongamia bearing, high oilyielding seeds.…”

“…Through the combination of outcrossing nature of Pongamia and also seeds used from multiple sources of trees for this pongamia plantation site, genetic variation is expected amongst these Pongamia trees. This is further reflected in phenotypic diversity observed between them, including tree size, leaf size, leaf shape, seed size, seed shape and seed oil composition (Kaushik et al, 2007;Kesari et al, 2008;. Flowering time is another example where the manifestation of differences in traits can be seen in Pongamia.…”
