Systematic Overview of Password Security Problems

Abstract: Alphanumeric passwords are the first line of defense in security for most information systems. Morris and Thompson identified passwords as a weak point in an Information System's security, 35 years ago. Their findings showed that 86% of the passwords were too short, contained lowercase letters only, digits only, were easily found in dictionaries and/or easily compromised. The objective of this paper is to perform a systematic literature review in the area of passwords and passwords security, in order to determ… Show more

“…The research data population is journals with a focus on the financial performance of the tourism industry before and after COVID-19. Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is defined as the process of identifying, assessing and interpreting all available research evidence with the aim of providing answers to specific research questions (Kitchenham & Brereton, 2013;Taneski et al, 2019). Systematic Literature Review is a term used to refer to a particular research or research methodology and development carried out to collect and evaluate related research on a particular topic focus.…”

“…Most online services require an account, and the user must authenticate to give proof of the ownership of their account. Authentication is still done mainly through passwords, although it is commonly known that passwords are a relatively weak method to protect a user account (Taneski et al, 2019). This has been confirmed in many studies, highlighting the problems with simple passwords and the reluctance to use password managers (Hayashi and Hong, 2011;Shen et al, 2016;Davis et al, 2022).…”

“…However, they are still weak in securing all kinds of information systems. Users' careless security behaviour, involving password reuse, writing down and sharing passwords, and creating short or low-quality passwords are the main problems related to password security issues [14]. Modelling users' risky online behaviour based on analysing millions of passwords, both the most frequent passwords and how users create new passwords, can be helpful to hackers [15,16].…”
