Systematic review and cladistic analysis of the Hernandariinae (Opiliones: Gonyleptidae)

Abstract: The harvestmen subfamily Hernandariinae is reviewed and a new classification is proposed based on cladistic analysis using 67 morphological characters. The subfamily is composed of six genera and 23 species and occurs in south-southeastern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. Fourteen new combinations are proposed: Hernandaria armatifrons (Roewer, 1917); H. una (Mello-Leitão, 1927); Acrogonyleptes granulatus (H. Soares, 1966); A. pectinifemur (Soares & Soares, 1947); Acanthogonyleptes alticola (Mello-… Show more

“…Although some previous studies mapped reproductive (Machado and Raimundo, ; Machado et al., ; Nazareth and Machado, ) and defensive behaviours (Hara and Gnaspini, ; Hara et al., ) on phylogenies, behavioural and ecological characters are virtually absent from the data matrices of all harvestman groups. Two exceptions are provided by Kury (), who defined one ecological character related to habitat use in the phylogeny of Mitobatinae; and by DaSilva and Pinto‐da‐Rocha (), who included the character “camouflage with debris” in the phylogeny of Hernandariinae. In addition to the difficulty of acquiring behavioural data for a large number of species, other issues, such as the difficulty of defining behavioural homologies and the supposed plasticity of behavioural characters, are frequently used as reasons to not employ behavioural and ecological data in phylogenetic analyses (see discussion in Proctor, ).…”

“…Within this modern framework, the systematics of many groups has been addressed by incorporating phylogenetic methods and an unprecedented set of characters upon which taxonomic actions were based. Examples of such an approach can be found in Mitobatinae (Kury, ; Bragagnolo and Pinto‐da‐Rocha, ), Caelopyginae (Pinto‐da‐Rocha, ), Bourguyiinae (Yamaguti and Pinto‐da‐Rocha, ), Goniosomatinae (DaSilva and Gnaspini, ), Hernandariinae (DaSilva and Pinto‐da‐Rocha, ), Sodreaninae (Pinto‐da‐Rocha and Bragagnolo, ), and Heteropachylinae (Mendes, ).…”

“…Pachylinae is the largest subfamily in Gonyleptidae, with 129 genera and 400 described species . The subfamily is considered polyphyletic, based on morphological (Pintoda-rocha, 2002;da Silva & Pinto-da-rocha, 2010;MendeS, 2011;Bragagnolo & Pinto-da-rocha, 2012;hara et al, 2012), phenotypic (caetano & Machado, 2013) and molecular data (Pinto-da-rocha et al, 2014).…”
