Systems of exchange values as tools for multi-agent organizations

Abstract: This paper introduces systems of exchange values as tools for the organization of multi-agent systems. Systems of exchange values are defined on the basis of the theory of social exchanges, developed by Piaget and Homans. A model of social organization is proposed, where social relations are construed as social exchanges and exchange values are put into use in the support of the continuity of the performance of social exchanges. The dynamics of social organizations is formulated in terms of the regulation of e… Show more

“…Piaget (1995) observes that situations in disequilibrium can occur during an exchange, and for various reasons. One example is when the investment of α is greater than the satisfaction of β (r αβ > s βα ), and another is when β does not recognize the full value of the work performed by α (t βα < r αβ ) (see Dimuro et al 2005 We note that exchange values are not a type of utility value: they do not serve the purpose of helping to choose between two alternative actions yet to be performed.…”

“…The centralized social exchange control mechanism presented in [3,4] is based on the Piaget's theory of social exchange values [5]. 1 It is performed by an equilibrium supervisor, whose duty is: (i) to determine, at each time, the target equilibrium point for the system; (ii) to decide on which actions it should recommend agents to perform in order to lead the system towards that equilibrium point; (iii) to maintain the system equilibrated until another equilibrium point is required.…”
