T-Cell Lymphopenia in Patients with Advanced Thyroid Carcinoma Is Associated with Poor Prognosis

Abstract: Background Aggressive forms of thyroid carcinoma (TC) show an abundant infiltration of immune cells, and this correlates with prognosis. However, little is known about circulating immune cell levels in advanced TC. Objective Investigate T‐cell and myeloid‐derived suppressor cell (MDSC) levels in peripheral blood of patients with advanced TC and correlate them with survival. Methods T cells and MDSCs were quantified by flow cytometry in peripheral blood from nine patients with advanced TC and nine healthy volun… Show more

“…PRDM1 is associated with overall survival of TC patients [ 29 ]. The percentage of CD4+ T cells is lower in patients with advanced metastatic TC [ 30 ]. ENTPD1 is highly expressed in TC, and high expression of ENTPD1contributs to the prognosis of TC patients [ 31 ].…”

“…Rabold’s study proposed that T lymphocytopenia was associated with a poor prognosis in patients with advanced thyroid cancer. 20 Teck Seo’s study reported that chemotherapy-related lymphocytopenia was an independent prognostic factor for adjuvant chemotherapy after potentially curative surgery in colorectal cancer patients. 21 In our study, multivariate analysis revealed that preoperative ALC and histological subtype were predictive markers of LRFS in NSCLS.…”

“…A recent work by Rabold et al. ( 43 ) found that T-cell lymphopenia in patients with thyroid cancer indicates an aggressive tumor behavior and might badly influence the outcome of the disease. Lymphopenia could play a role also for persistent infections by oncogenic viruses.…”

“…Generally, there is limited understanding regarding the relationship between the development of thyroid adenomas or carcinomas and lymphopenia. A recent work by Rabold et al (43) found that T-cell lymphopenia in patients with thyroid cancer indicates an aggressive tumor behavior and might badly influence the outcome of the disease. Lymphopenia could play a role also for persistent infections by oncogenic viruses.…”
