“…A comparison of results is complicated by the heterogeneity of the HnB products studied and by the different measurement methods used [50]. Nevertheless, the overall picture that emerges from independent aerosol studies largely confirmed PMI’s findings, with respect to the levels of nicotine, carbon monoxide (CO), total particulate matter (TPM), and the main other HPHCs in the IQOS TM aerosol (e.g., volatile organic compounds, VOCs; aldehydes; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; and tobacco-specific nitrosamines, TSNAs) [50,51,52,53,54,55,56,57,58]. Independent research with respect to (in vitro and in vivo) IQOS TM toxicology is rare (an exception being a study by Leigh and colleagues), whereas, human clinical and behavioral/experiential studies focusing on the IQOS TM use is virtually nonexistent [50,59].…”

“…Firstly, a significant reduction in toxicant concentrations was reported for the majority of the potentially reduced risk products. Depending on the product category, reduced exposure of up to 99% compared to CC was observed in product characterization studies by the manufacturers and reproduced by independent (governmental) organizations [ [19] , [20] , [21] , [22] , 24 , 52 ]. The decrease in toxicant exposure should be resembled in significantly reduced levels of the corresponding biomarkers of exposure compared to smokers of CCs [ 53 ].…”

“…Heated tobacco products (HTP) contain a tobacco substrate, designed to be heated and not combusted, to produce a nicotine-containing aerosol [ 18 ]. This new approach has been tested in studies organized by tobacco industry and independent governmental institutions, in first line indicating a reduced exposure to the harmful and potentially harmful chemicals [ [19] , [20] , [21] , [22] , [23] , [24] ].…”

“…To address the individual risk reduction associated with THS use, premarket assessment studies including aerosol chemistry, in vitro and in vivo toxicity studies, and clinical studies coherently demonstrate that switching from cigarette smoking to THS use consistently and significantly reduces the exposure to harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) to levels that approach the reductions associated with smoking abstinence [7-15]. Numerous independent studies [16-19] and government-affiliated labs including the FDA’s Southeast Tobacco Laboratory [20], UK Committee on Toxicity [21], German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) [22], Japan National Institute of Public Health [23], New Zeeland CRL Energy Ltd [24], and Dutch National Institute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM: Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu ) [25] have evaluated the aerosol chemistry of THS and confirmed the lower levels of HPHCs in the emissions of THS. Public Health of England [26] has systematically reviewed the existing evidence on THS and concluded that THS is likely to expose users to lower levels of HPHCs.…”
