TAIGA—an advanced hybrid detector complex for astroparticle physics and high energy gamma-ray astronomy in the Tunka valley

Abstract: A: The TAIGA observatory addresses ground-based gamma-ray astronomy at energies from a few TeV to several PeV, cosmic ray physics from 100 TeV to several EeV as well as for search for axion-like particles, Lorentz violations and another evidence of New Physics. In 2020 year a one square kilometer TAIGA setup should be put in operation.

“…The main projects are the imaging air Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) of the 4 m class, the light front sampling HiSCORE array [5], and underground muon detectors. For more details of the project, see the overview talk of this conference [3]. One of the goals of TAIGA is to establish the hybrid method, which aims to combine the gamma/hadron separation power of IACT images with the core position and origin estimation of the HiSCORE array.…”

“…However, experiments aiming to achieve useful sensitivities require effective areas of a few km 2 . The Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray and Gamma ray Astronomy (TAIGA) aims to establish the combination of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) with the light front sampling optical timing stations of HiSCORE to cost-effectively cover 1 km 2 in a first and 5 km 2 in a second stage [2,3].…”

“…Due to the high sensitivity of the stations and the ability to measure the signal registration time at different stations, the accuracy of determining the EAS parameters is higher than that of many other instruments. [4]…”

“…The Tunka-Grande scintillation array is a part of the TAIGA hybrid experimental complex [1] designed for high-energy gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic-ray physics. It contains 19 scintillation stations located on the area of the Tunka-133 Cherenkov array [2] in the circle with a radius of about 400 meters.…”
