Tailoring hydroxyapatite microspheres by spray-drying for powder bed fusion feedstock

Abstract: The present work deals with a study on the physical characteristics of hydroxyapatite microspheres produced by spray-drying process through different operating conditions. Obtained hydroxyapatite microspheres will be used as powder feedstock in powder bed selective laser processing additive manufacturing technologies where the flowability and the particle size distribution of the powder feedstock is of special importance. Spray air pressure and solid content of the slurries were the most influent parameters to… Show more

“…HAp has been added to poly-L-lactic acid, polycaprolactone, and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) for applications in tissue engineering and implantology. 36 However, there are few reports of the application of HAp as a filler in starch-based bioplastics. 37 Therefore, we fabricated a prototype biodegradable food tray produced by the compression molding of a starch foam composite with 5 wt% of HAp 1 M. Well-shaped foam trays were obtained with smooth and homogenous surfaces (Figure 5A).…”

“…And this was possible without major alteration of the composition or the structural phase of the initial HA product. As mentioned in the introduction, the utilization of these suspensions via the spray-drying process and the subsequent PBF additive manufacturing process was already explored [22,23].…”

“…The band at 1400 cm − 1 was attributed to the vibration band from C-H bending from the methacrylate backbone of the dispersant DC [60]. Whether or not the presence of DC affects the posterior spray-drying step is detailed in another paper [22].…”
