Tailoring Materials Properties by Accumulative Roll Bonding

Abstract: Accumulative roll bonding (ARB) as a method of severe plastic deformation (SPD) is an interesting established process to produce ultrafine‐grained (UFG) sheet materials with high potential for light weight constructions. The ARB process offers a high flexibility for tailored material design. Al2O3 particles, carbon fibers and titanium foils are used as reinforcement of aluminum sheets introduced during accumulative roll bonding. Furthermore multicomponent materials are produced by cladding of different aluminu… Show more

“…Besides the conventional route for producing UFG sheets by ARB processing, recent research on accumulative roll bonding [ 20 ] is focusing on the processing of multicomponent materials with the goal to produce tailored materials with properties adjusted to special needs. This development is driven by the very high potential of the accumulative roll bonding process to manufacture reinforced or graded structures.…”

“…The high number of individual layers within an ARB processed sheet offers many possibilities for reinforcing the layered material stack and for producing graded material sheets with varying properties from the inside to the outside or for producing laminates consisting of alternating layers of different materials. Besides the conventional route the ARB process offers manifold possibilities to introduce reinforcing phases in form of particles, fi bers or foils or to join different ARB materials and therewith produce tailored and graded nanostructured materials (see tailoring routes in Figure 1 , [ 20 ] ). Intelligent layer architecture can be achieved by the combination of different ARB materials within several cycles.…”

“…Therefore, most of the materials that have been processed by SPD-methods are single component materials. The ARB process is an exception that allows homogeneous co-deformation of different phases of one material or even of different materials up to a certain extent [14][15][16][17].…”

“…Besides the formation of an ultrafine-grained microstructure, this process offers a OPEN ACCESS high potential for tailoring properties of ultrafine-grained materials [4,5]. In this respect particle reinforcement is of special interest because it allows a high freedom in designing different spatial distributions of reinforcements [6].…”
