Sustainable packaging has been steadily gaining prominence within the food industry, with biobased materials emerging as a promising substitute for conventional petroleum-derived plastics. This review is dedicated to the examination of innovative biobased materials in the context of bread packaging. It aims to furnish a comprehensive survey of recent discoveries, fundamental properties, and potential applications. Commencing with an examination of the challenges posed by various bread types and the imperative of extending shelf life, the review underscores the beneficial role of biopolymers as internal coatings or external layers in preserving product freshness while upholding structural integrity. Furthermore, the introduction of biocomposites, resulting from the amalgamation of biopolymers with active biomolecules, fortifies barrier properties, thus shielding bread from moisture, oxygen, and external influences. The review also addresses the associated challenges and opportunities in utilizing biobased materials for bread packaging, accentuating the ongoing requirement for research and innovation to create advanced materials that ensure product integrity while diminishing the environmental footprint.

Twin-screw extruders are widely used to manufacture various polymers for large-scale processing in the industry. However, new polymers and modified polymers that have not been manufactured before would require experiments to undergo a trial-and-error phase that is time-consuming and costly. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based model was developed in Ansys Polyflow to describe the extrusion process behavior and predict the processability of different polymers. The optimum processing conditions for polypropylene (PP) and polylactic acid (PLA) acquired from trial-and-error experiments were simulated, and the resulting torque was validated using experimental data. The model was in good agreement with the results of the experiment with a less than 10% difference. It was further validated by determining its effectiveness in calculating the torque for rotation speed and feed rates where the barrel is sufficiently filled with the polymer. Moreover, the investigation also showed that the model has successfully determined the processability of semicrystalline polymers.

Although the utilization of recycled polymers is essential to sustain the environment, conventional recycled polymers face limitations in application due to the degradation of their properties caused by impurities. To solve the problem the performance deterioration of these recycled polymers, this study aimed to enhance their compatibility by chemically adding polypropylene‐graft‐maleic anhydride (PP‐g‐MAH) and physically manipulate a screw profile by using an extrusion simulation program. As a result of applying the optimized extrusion process set by the simulation program, significant improvements in the compatibility and dispersion of fillers within the polymer were observed through scanning electron microscopy image analysis. In addition, through detailed analysis of rheological data, the positive impact of adding compatibilizer and changing screw profile on rheological properties was demonstrated. As the compatibility of recycled polymer blends improved, tensile strength increased by approximately two‐fold and thermal conductivity was significantly improved, which were decisive factors in dramatically enhancing the performance of recycled polymers. These improved polymer properties provide an opportunity for recycled polymers to be applied more broadly and will expand the potential for new applications in various industrial fields.
