Tailoring the phosphorus release from biochar-based fertilizers: role of magnesium or calcium addition during co-pyrolysis

Abstract: The addition of MgO in the co-pyrolysis of sugarcane filter cake with H3PO4 resulted in a biochar-based fertilizer with gradual P release over time. In contrast, the P release from the biochar modified with CaO and H3PO4 was poor.

“…As a result, it increases the nutrient content in BCEKH [31]. The X-ray diffraction pattern showed that Ca2P2O7 peaks appeared at 2θ of 20.18°, 23.893°, 26.652°, 27.674°, 29.867°, 35.285°, indicating that a part of CaCO3 reacted with H3PO4 during pyrolytic heating process [32]. Previous studies have shown that phosphorus-modified biochar can increase the number and thickness of biofilms, further increasing beneficial microbial survival [24].…”

“…Furthermore, P and Ca releases are more aligned with the Power function as indicated by the parameters c and an in the Power function. Kinetic equations have rarely been used in previous studies to assess the release of modified biochar-loaded bacteria in soil, and the kinetics of modified biochar on P in static water generally conforms to the Power function model and Parabolic diffusion model [32,42]. In this case, the release of K is more in line with the Parabolic diffusion model (R 2 up to 0.99 in both cases), which proves that the release of K is more likely to be diffuse.…”

“…Employing advanced computational techniques allows researchers to study molecular structures, thermodynamics, spectroscopic data, reaction rates, and dynamics with high precision and accuracy. It can simulate different phases like gases, liquids, solids, solutions, and interfaces (Ahmed et al 2023;Cramer 2004;Jensen 2017;Kubicki 2016). Computational chemistry enables the simulation of adsorption/ desorption processes, accounting for the impact of surface composition, spatial configuration, solution environment, ionic strength, and solution pH.…”

“…Computational chemistry encompasses different levels of theory, each offering distinct accuracy and computational efficiency. At the simplest level, molecular mechanics employ empirical potentials to describe the energy of molecular systems, with three primary resolution levels: allatom, united-atom, and coarse-grained representations (Cramer 2004;Jensen 2017;Kmiecik et al 2016).…”

“…Recently, numerous strategic methodologies, including optimisation of pyrolysis conditions and temperature, activating agents, and pH, have been developed to tailor the physico-chemical properties of biochar. 15 Due to these tuneable properties, biochar finds diverse applications in many fields, including soil remediation, 16 carbon storage, 17 manure composting, 18 decontamination of water and waste water 19,20 by means of micro and macro filters, 21 biogas production, 22 detoxificants, 23 in the building sector, 24 air pollution management, 25 in textiles as a fabric addictive and flame-retardant clothing, 26 catalysts, 27 activators, 1 electrode materials, and modifiers. 28 It has also been reported that the stable porous matrix of the biochar acts as a good microenvironment for microorganisms.…”
