Tamsulosin does not have greater efficacy than conventional treatment for distal ureteral stone expulsion in Mexican patients

Abstract: The objective of the study was to evaluate tamsulosin (TAM) efficacy in distal ureteral stone expulsion in Mexican patients. A double-blind clinical trial was carried out for a period of 4 weeks on 65 patients assigned to the following treatment groups: Group A, 32 patients receiving conventional treatment + TAM; and Group B, 33 patients receiving conventional treatment + placebo. Patients of both groups were checked every 14 days to evaluate treatment adherence and clinical progression through plain abdominal… Show more

No se observó heterogeneidad entre los estudios (I 2 = 0%).…”

“…Since the last published meta-analysis, we found and included 10 additional studies. 14,[21][22][23][24][25][26][27]33,35 To compare these previous meta-analyses and evaluate differences, our study reported the results in two ways: the 10 most recent studies since the last meta-analysis and the combined results. 8 Our study focused solely on tamsulosin for distal ureterolithiasis and not all a-antagonists, as previously published by Seitz and colleagues, Hollingsworth and colleagues, Singh and colleagues, and Parsons and colleagues.…”

“…Only 4 studies had a low risk of bias, 14,27,33,36 7 had a moderate risk of bias, 24,25,30,32,34,35,38,40 and 11 had a high risk of bias 23,26,28,29,31,37,39,[41][42][43] (Figure 2). A poor description of the randomization process is mainly responsible for the high proportion of moderate or high risk of bias studies.…”

“…Five studies were duplicates, 5 did not contain sufficient data to analyze in a meta-analysis, and 1 reported 1-week outcomes (versus 3-to 4-week outcomes). Authors for 7 studies were contacted for additional information, 8,[17][18][19][20][21][22] and complete data were available in only 8 cases. Agreement between study abstractors was excellent (Cohen's k¼0.94 [95% CI 0.82 to 1.0]).…”
