Targeted intervention strategies to optimise diversion of BMW in the Dublin, Ireland region

Abstract: Urgent transformation is required in Ireland to divert biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) from landfill and prevent increases in overall waste generation. When BMW is optimally managed, it becomes a resource with value instead of an unwanted by-product requiring disposal. An analysis of survey responses from commercial and residential sectors for the Dublin region in previous research by the authors proved that attitudes towards and behaviour regarding municipal solid waste is spatially variable. “…Raising awareness through educating or informing people about the benefits of water conservation has the potential to promote water-saving actions. Purcell and Magette [40] found a positive association between involvement of people in educational programmes and positive behavioural outcomes. Awareness campaigns on household-based measures for saving water, including doing laundry and flushing toilets when it is only necessary, water reuse (for activities such as washing dishes, washing cars, and watering gardens), and taking short showers, might assist in minimising rising water demand.…”

“…There is a paucity of information in the published literature regarding consumer perspectives of recycling (Jesson, 2009). This aspect of inquiry is important because householder needs may vary from one locality to another (Purcell and Magette, 2011) and there is evidence to suggest that blanket approaches are less effective (Panaretou et al, 2017). The preplanning stage also requires the acquisition of consumer intelligence (insights) from multiple sources.…”

“…Considering evaluative studies can offer crucial insights for future practices (Ashton and Manchanda, 2018). Rigorous reviews and systematic analysis of waste-management interventions are needed to identify best-practices to inform programme design, implementation, and evaluation (Purcell and Magette, 2011).…”
