Targeted Therapy: Attacking Cancer with Molecular and Immunological Targeted Agents

Abstract: Today, personalized cancer therapy with targeted agents has taken center stage, and offers individualized treatment to many. As the mysteries of the genes in a cell's DNA and their specific proteins are defined, advances in the understanding of cancer gene mutations and how cancer evades the immune system have been made. This article provides a basic and simplified understanding of the available (Food and Drug Administration- approved) molecularly and immunologically targeted agents in the USA. Other agents ma… Show more

“…Poly ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) inhibitors are currently the most promising agents in this group, based on the similarity of this subtype to ovarian cancers. [73][74][75][76][77] Alternative holistic approaches are being continuously sought as the World Health Organization (WHO) forecasts that approximately 80% of the global population would use one or the other form of alternative medicine in their life time. 78 In this report, we have described the application of green nanotechnology to holistic Ayurvedic medicine.…”

“…With the development of gene technology, we can classify different cancers based on their speci c molecular signals. These advances have further allowed the identi cation of molecular therapeutic targets speci c to cancer cells, thus providing a framework whereby therapies can be speci cally matched to corresponding molecular targets (4). By targeting the complex network of signaling pathways that regulates cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and apoptosis (cell death), researchers have developed new targeted agents that interfere with the growth and proliferation of cancer cells (5).…”

“…Approximately 70 % of cancer related deaths occur in developing countries. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimated that the annual number of new cancer cases would rise to an estimated 21.7 million in 2030 along with 13.0 million deaths (Wilkes, 2018[ 39 ]; Dalton et al, 2019[ 6 ]). Among the various strategies for cancer treatment, chemotherapy is often known as the most widely used method to prevent and treat cancer.…”
