Tea Polyphenols and Their Preventive Measures against Cancer: Current Trends and Directions

Abstract: Cancer is exerting an immense strain on the population and health systems all over the world. Green tea because of its higher simple catechin content (up to 30% on dry weight basis) is greatly popular as an anti-cancer agent which is found to reduce the risks of cancer as well as a range of other diseases. In addition, several in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that green tea possesses copious health benefits like anti-diabetic, anti-obese, anti-inflammatory, neuro-protective, cardio-protective, etc. This… Show more

“…This concept can be applied to cancer prevention as well as to cancer therapy. Although there is a plethora of compounds that have been described to act in a cancer-preventive manner because of their antioxidant characteristics [ 30 , 31 ], systematic searches for target-specific inhibitors of antioxidant proteins are rare. As antioxidant genes play an important role in the resistance of tumors to standard chemotherapy [ 14 , 32 , 33 ], inhibitors of antioxidant proteins may resensitize tumors to chemotherapeutic drugs.…”

“…Tea polyphenols, including flavonoids, and their resultant oxidative products have been associated with several pharmacotherapeutic benefits, including the potential to protect against cardiovascular illnesses [ 12 ] and cancer in humans [ 13 ]. The potential benefits of the intervention include immunosuppressive effects and the reduction of oxidative stress [ 14 ].…”
