Technical Efficiency of the Setbag Net Fishery in Bangladesh: An Application of a Stochastic Production Frontier Model

Abstract: A study was conducted to examine the technical efficiency for Setbag net fishing boats operated in the year 2014. A total of 100 samples of Setbag net fishing boats were selected, of which 40 were from Cox's Bazar, 40 were from Chittagong and 20 were from Bagerhat. Stochastic frontier (with technical inefficiency effect) model was specified and estimated. Results have shown that the estimated mean technical efficiency of Setbag net fishing boats is 84 percent. The efficiency of Setbag net fishing boat was posi… Show more

“…Begum (2004) and Chakma (2004) found average catch per boat was 32 kg and 23.08 kg respectively and these reports also differ from the results of the present study. Khan et al (1997); Habib et al (2014); Ahmed (1991) and Rabbani et al (2017); Nielsen et al (2018); Nabi and Ullah, (2012) studied on the population parameters of these investigated area and found over exploitation of the most commercial species and this also agrees with the present study. Islam (1987) found the highest average daily production (231.68 kg) in the month of October; this agrees with the present investigation the highest average daily production was found in the month of October in Kumira.…”

“…The study employed a stochastic frontier approach, revealing all the variable inputs included in the model exhibited a positive relationship to the catch, although the days at sea variable exhibited a negative relationship, indicating an increasing FAD number made fishers spend more time fishing, thereby eventually decreasing the technical efficiency. Rabbani, Khan, Islam, and Lucky () studied the technical efficiency of Setbag net fishery practices in Bangladesh with a stochastic frontier model, revealing the technical efficiency of a Setbag net fishery boat was positively related to the total fishing cost, while the number of the nets was negatively associated with fishing days and crew sizes. Factors influencing technical inefficiency, however, included the age of the fishers, the engine horsepower and distance travelled.…”

“…In agreement with this explanation, studies by Refs. [ 12 , 26 , 58 , 70 ] also found an under-deployed quantity of gillnet, which is below the capacity of the water body. Contrary to our finding, empirical studies by Refs.…”
