Technical Note: Dosimetric impact of spherical applicator size in Intrabeam™ IORT for treating unicentric breast cancer lesions

Abstract: The applicator size has a moderate impact on the EUDs, a greater size of applicator will deliver a greater EUD at the same cancer cell infiltrating depth, but a smaller size of applicator is seen to produce a greater TR for the shallow lesions (depth <5 mm). In addition, a greater size of applicator is preferred for treating a deeply seated lesion (depth >5 mm) because it produces a greater TR and EUD than a smaller size of applicator. IB-IORT is a preferable alternative to uniform dose treatment when treating… Show more

“…Tissues and vital organs are therefore protected from radiation. Intrabeam technology progressed rapidly in recent years and is widely used in the treatment of breast cancer [20], brain tumor [11], metastatic spinal cord cancer [21], and rectal cancer [12]. Its advantages are as follows: (i) The treatment time is short, which greatly shortens the interval between surgery and other treatment methods and overall treatment time.…”

“…The dose-rate as a function of the depth around the XRS is characterized to commission a new source in the clinical treatment planning system. Figure 4 presents the output characteristics for 15 XRSs on a logarithmic scale for 40-kVp and 50-kVp energies. The dose gradient near the XRS is very steep; thus, the separation between the parallel-plate ionization chamber and x-ray source must be known to high accuracy.…”

“…This work presents a mean of the DDCs, which can assist investigators in performing ancillary research. For example, investigators have attempted to calculate relative biological effectiveness and equivalent uniform dose using beam data from a single XRS. These studies could benefit from the analysis performed on a mean dataset, which is not biased by individual source data and is a more robust representation of the delivered doses to patients treated with this device.…”
