Technique for bulk Fermiology by photoemission applied to layered ruthenates

Abstract: We report the Fermi surfaces of the superconductor Sr2RuO4 and the non-superconductor Sr1.8Ca0.2RuO4 probed by bulk-sensitive high-energy angle-resolved photoemission. It is found that there is one square-shaped hole-like, one square-shaped electron-like and one circle-shaped electron-like Fermi surface in both compounds. These results provide direct evidence for nesting instability giving rise to magnetic fluctuations. Our study clarifies that the electron correlation effects are changed with composition depe… Show more

“…Closed circles with error bars denote the peak positions of the second derivative. The Fermi momenta k F estimated from the momentum distribution curves (MDCs) 67 at E F are shown by triangles. We see that in the experiment there are two bands crossing the Fermi level at different k-points in the (0,0)-(π,0) direction.…”

“…However, the bulk sensitivity of the soft X-ray (hν ∼ 800 eV) PES was confirmed by the observation of the 4f PES for Ce compounds. 20 Soft X-ray PES is currently an essential approach to reveal electronic states of transition metal compounds 21,22 and rare earth compounds. 23 In addition, more bulk-sensitive PES by using hard X rays (HAXPES) has become feasible.…”

“…3,4,5 For metallic systems, highresolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) is promising to detect their occupied states. Nowadays both surface-sensitive low-energy 6 and bulk-sensitive high-energy 7,8 ARPES measurements are feasible. Compared to ARPES, RIXS is really bulk sensitive and applicable to insulators with high resistivity, where the electron correlation is even stronger.…”
