Technology Requirements and Work Group Communication for Telecommuters

Abstract: As organizations implement more and more distributed work arrangements such as telecommuting, there is a need to understand the determinants of success of this new work setting. This research investigated three variables believed to impact outcomes in telecommuting: the availability of information system technology, the availability of communication technologies, and the communication patterns of telecommuters within their work groups. Two perspectives are used in this study. The direct effects of these three … Show more

“…In the existing literature, the task construct has been modeled into non-routineness and interdependence (Goodhue and Thompson 1995); quantitative analysis, literature searches, Fig. 7 Requirement-technology fit model (Source: Adapted from Goodhue and Thompson 1995;Yang et al 2013) text and document organization, and data file access (Goodhue et al 1997); a set of managerial questionnaire (Goodhue et al 2000); communication centrality (Belanger et al 2001); tasks varying in structure (Shirani et al 1999 (Carver and Turoff 2007), training (Holgu铆n-Veras et al 2007) and authentication (Haddow et al 2008).…”

“…Bellanger argues that these determinants must be matched to ensure successful outcomes of telecommuting. For example, in another research project, findings supported the matching of computer and telecommunications technology to telecommuters, based on their needs to communicate with teammates (Bellanger, Collins, and Cheney, 2001). …”

“…For example, Nance and Straub (1996) examine the role of TTF in the utilisation decision. A thorough review of TTF literature indicates a positive influence of fit on performance (Belanger et al, 2001;Kositanurit et al, 2006;Staples and Seddon, 2004;Wilson Theophilus and Vance, 1994;Zigurs and Buckland, 1998;Zigurs et al, 1999).…”
