Tectonic evolution of the Mesozoic South Anyui suture zone, eastern Russia: A critical component of paleogeographic reconstructions of the Arctic region

Abstract: The South Anyui suture zone consists of late Paleozoic-Jurassic ultramafic rocks and Jurassic-Cretaceous pre-, syn-, and postcollisional sedimentary rocks. It represents the closure of a Mesozoic ocean basin that separated two microcontinents in northeastern Russia, the Kolyma-Omolon block and the Chukotka block. In order to understand the geologic history and improve our understanding of Mesozoic paleogeography of the Arctic region, we obtained U-Pb ages on pre-and postcollisional igneous rocks and detrital z… Show more

“…Many data on SASZ geology were published by Parfenov and Natal'in [110], Sokolov et al [152][153][154], Amato et al [1]. The suture is exposed onshore in Western Chukotka where it is composed of a complexly deformed package of tectonic nappes thrusted southward onto the adjacent margin of the KOCST as revealed by seismic refraction data [1,44] [38,154] ophiolites. The rocks are intruded by syn-and post-collisional granodiorites and granites with isotopic ages of 116-105 Ma [1,97,152,153].…”

Magnetic data allow to extend the SASZ offshore from the Kolyma River mouth to Bol'shoi Lyakhov Island, where dismembered ophiolites and island-arc volcanic complexes are again exposed [24,78].…”

“…Существовавшая в это время Кульпольнейская дуга, даже в случае ее заложения возле края Чукотско-го микроконтинента [23], не могла стать источником сноса для отложений Верхне-Пегтымельской впади-ны. В пользу ее заложения на океаническом фунда-менте и принадлежности к структурам Южно-Анюй-ской сутуры свидетельствуют строение, состав и взаимоотношения ее комплексов, а также единичные геохимические данные [3,23].…”
