Understanding the structural evolution of the South Dezful Embayment (SDE) in the Zagros Fold-and-Thrust Belt (ZFTB) is significant for hydrocarbon exploration and production. The structural evolution of this area has been controlled by the reactivation of basement structures related to the oblique convergence along the ZFTB. In this work, we study the effect of the pre-contractional interaction between the basement step and overlaid salt layer superimposed by the Zagros shortening on the structural style and evolution of the sedimentary basin in the SDE. We use multidisciplinary approaches involving surface and subsurface data and analogue models. Disharmonic folds with small wavelength formed over the Kharg-Mish Palaeo-high (KMPH) where the sedimentary cover is thinner. On the other hand, faulted detachment folds with large wavelengths developed in the adjacent depocenters. Furthermore, the KMPH affected the geometry and kinematics of the frontal part of the Zagros Belt, which is characterized by the Mountain Front Flexure (MFF) topographic step. Long-lasting active deformation of the sedimentary cover over the frontal ramp of the KMPH developed the South Izeh Promontory (SIP). Localized contraction in the SIP was accommodated temporally by trishear fault-propagation folding and resulted in > 5 km elevation difference between this promontory and two adjacent local basins. Supporting scaled analogue models show that structural evolution, folding and along-strike variations in fold style of the SDE have been controlled by thickness variations of the sedimentary cover and the geometry of the inherited pre-salt structure. Based on the results of this study, the effect of inherited structural highs on the structure and kinematics of the SDE provide important insights for hydrocarbon entrapment, migration and exploration.

At the end of the Palaeozoic Era, most species on Earth disappeared completely and the global sedimentary environment and biology changed dramatically. The Permian–Triassic boundary (PTB) was studied in three sections of the middle Upper Yangtze Platform, SW China: Xingwen well and Zhijin and Shangsi sections. These sections are characterized by carbonate-platform, toe-of-slope and basin facies, respectively. Detailed analysis of 100 closely spaced thin-sections revealed a total of 24 microfacies and 11 microfacies associations based on the dominant carbonate grain size and the skeletal material (type and proportion). Six bioassemblages are documented for the first time, spanning c. 1 Ma across the boundary succession, including normal, resurrected and miniaturized Permian biota, and cyanobacteria-dominated, survival post-crisis and neonatal Triassic biota. The Xingwen well indicated sedimentary evolution from a rimmed carbonate platform to a homoclinal carbonate ramp, as well as a sharp fall in sea level just prior to the PTB in the study area. The Zhijin section revealed a slope setting, in which toe-of-slope and middle-ramp microfacies are identified. The Shangsi section showed a complete evolution of basin and outer-ramp microfacies and bioassemblages. Fossil evidence showed that the Permian biota (trilobites, gastropods and phylloid algae) occurred in the uppermost Changhsingian stage and was overlain by biomicrites with miniaturized ostracods (< 0.2 mm in size). This indicated that the major extinction horizon is located up to 14 cm below the PTB, which lies in the middle–lower segments of the miniaturized ostracod layer.

The factors controlling the organic matter accumulation in the organic-rich shale of the Lucaogou Formation in the southern Junggar Basin, remain controversial. To more explicitly reveal the hydrothermal events and its mechanism on the organic matter enrichment, we performed mineralogy and geochemistry methods on dolomite and black shale samples from Well FK-1 in Fukang Sag. The high (Fe + Mn)/Ti ratios, the enrichment of Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, and REY, and multiple hydrothermal minerals (e.g., ankerite, dolomite, zeolite, authigenic albite, and microcline) suggest five episodes of hydrothermal events. In addition, the low-to-high-varied Sr/Ba, V/(V + Ni) (Al + Fe)/(Ca + Mg), and Sr/Cu ratios, as well as the dolomite formation all well indicate a brackish-saline, suboxic-anoxic, shallow to deep water condition under a warm-humid to hot-arid climate with rhythmic sedimentation. The fluctuated total organic carbon content (up to 12.16 wt%) suggest the periodic organic matter accumulation. Three patterns of organic matter enrichment occurred during the rift-drift transition of the southern Junggar Basin, productivity and preservation played distinguishing roles in different intervals. Productivity periodically fluctuated because of the episodic hydrothermal events and warm-humid climate changes. Preservation was triggered by the saline, anoxic, and well-stratified water setting under the relatively hot-arid climate, which became progressively favorable in the gradually stabilized basin.
