In an IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function–based wireless network with multiple hops, a node operates on its own with several predefined data rates (i.e. following modulation and coding schemes). Moreover, the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function node’s communication is characterized by transmission and carrier-sensing distances. The transmission one is, in general, reverse proportional to the data rate. Meanwhile, the carrier distance keeps constant regardless of the modulation and coding scheme. Therefore, when a node has a high transmission rate, within its carrier-sensing range, the number of nodes may increase. The previous works have not yet extensively investigated the impact of data rates on such a scenario. This article addresses that issue aiming to quantify the network performance of the multi-hop IEEE 802.11 networks. As a solution, we propose the mathematical expressions, which consider data rates, for end-to-end throughputs, as well as delays in the network with string topology. We confirm the expressions’ correctness by presenting the quantitative agreements between the analytical and simulation results.

In wireless rechargeable sensor networks (WRSNs), a mobile charger (MC) moves around to compensate for sensor nodes’ energy via a wireless medium. In such a context, designing a charging strategy that optimally prolongs the network lifetime is challenging. This work aims to solve the challenges by introducing a novel, on-demand charging algorithm for MC that attempts to maximize the network lifetime, where the term “network lifetime” is defined by the interval from when the network starts till the first target is not monitored by any sensor. The algorithm, named Fuzzy Q-charging, optimizes both the time and location in which the MC performs its charging tasks. Fuzzy Q-charging uses Fuzzy logic to determine the optimal charging-energy amounts for sensors. From that, we propose a method to find the optimal charging time at each charging location. Fuzzy Q-charging leverages Q-learning to determine the next charging location for maximizing the network lifetime. To this end, Q-charging prioritizes the sensor nodes following their roles and selects a suitable charging location where MC provides sufficient power for the prioritized sensors. We have extensively evaluated the effectiveness of Fuzzy Q-charging in comparison to the related works. The evaluation results show that Fuzzy Q-charging outperforms the others. First, Fuzzy Q-charging can guarantee an infinite lifetime in the WSRNs, which have a sufficient large sensor number or a commensurate target number. Second, in other cases, Fuzzy Q-charging can extend the time until the first target is not monitored by 6.8 times on average and 33.9 times in the best case, compared to existing algorithms.

To solve the problem of security deployment in a hybrid wireless sensor network, a novel privacy-preserving mobile coverage scheme based on trustworthiness is proposed. The novel scheme can efficiently mitigate some malicious attacks such as eavesdropping and pollution and optimize the coverage of hybrid wireless sensor networks (HWSNs) at the same time. Compared with the traditional mobile coverage scheme, the security of data transmission and mobility are considered in the deployment of HWSNs. Firstly, our scheme can mitigate the eavesdropping attacks efficiently utilizing privacy-preserving signature. Then, the trust mobile protocol based on the trustworthiness is used to defend the pollution attacks and improve the security of mobility. In privacy-preserving signature, the hardness of discrete logarithm determines the degree of security of the privacy-preserving signature. The correctness and effectiveness of signature algorithm are proven by the probabilities of the native messages which can be recovered and forged which is negligible. Furthermore, a mobile scheme based on the trustworthiness (MSTW) is proposed to optimize the network coverage and improve the security of mobility. Finally, the simulation compared with a previous algorithm is carried out, in which the communication overhead, computational complexity, and the coverage are given. The result of the simulation shows that our scheme has roughly the same network coverage as the previous schemes on the basis of ensuring the security of the data transmission and mobility.
