Temperature and the development rates of thrips: Evidence for a constraint on local adaptation?

Abstract: Abstract. Typically, the relationship between insect development and temperature is described by two characteristics: the minimum temperature needed for development to occur (Tmin) and the number of day degrees required (DDR) for the completion of develop ment. We investigated these characteristics in three English populations of Thrips major and T. tabaci [Cawood, Yorkshire (N53°49', W1°7'); Boxworth, Cambridgeshire (N52°15', W0°1'); Silwood Park, Berkshire (N51°24', W0°38')], and two popula tions of Franklin… Show more

“…For example, Eq. (2) holds true for spiders (Araneae: Arachnida; Li, 1998) and thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae; Stacey and Fellowes, 2002). The linear relationship between k and t also holds for the data of Table 2 Lower developmental threshold (t) and sum of effective temperatures (k) of several mites.…”

“…This formula has been convincingly applied in the works of Honěk and Kocourek (1988), Li (1998), Stacey and Fellowes (2002) and Trudgill et al, (2005). However, the sample sizes used by Ikemoto (2003) were very small.…”

“…Most of our findings were similar to those of Ting (1963) but vastly different from those of Men et al (2008) (Table 4). Distinct results may be related to differences in the experimental temperature range, environmental humidity or geographic strains, as observed in other insects (Trimble and Lund, 1983;Stacey andFellowes, 2002, Fantinou et al, 2003). More specifically, Men et al (2008) conducted their research on an A. lucorum strain from Shandong province over a temperature range of 17-29ºC and 80% RH; however, the average temperatures during February-March in key cotton growing regions of northern China range 390 Y. LU et al between 0-7ºC.…”

“…Registros dessa natureza relativos a F. occidentalis foram obtidos em amendoizeiro, pepineiro, crisântemo e feijoeiro (Lowry et al 1992, Gaum et al 1994, McDonald et al1998, Stacey & Fellowes 2002. No entanto, informações relativas ao efeito da temperatura quando F. occidentalis se desenvolve associada à cultura do morangueiro ainda não foram geradas.…”
