Temperature-dependent Faraday rotation and magnetization reorientation in cerium-substituted yttrium iron garnet thin films

Abstract: We report on the temperature dependence of the magnetic and magneto-optical properties in cerium-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Ce:YIG) thin films. Measurements of the Faraday rotation as a function of temperature show that the magnetic easy axis of thin Ce:YIG films reorients from in-plane to out-of-plane on cooling below −100 °C. We argue that the temperature-dependence of the magnetostriction and magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Ce:YIG is the dominant factor contributing to the change in easy axis directi… Show more

“…Rare-earth iron garnets (REIG) with PMA have also been developed, in which the PMA originates from magnetoelastic anisotropy due to the epitaxial mismatch strain of the REIG on the gadolinium iron garnet (GGG) substrate [12,18]. TmIG [5,18,19], SmIG (Sm 3 Fe 5 O 12 ) [20], and TbIG (Tb 3 Fe 5 O 12 ) [21] films, as well as Ce-or Bi-substituted YIG [22][23][24], exhibit strain-induced PMA. Other thin film RE garnets include GdIG (Gd 3 Fe 5 O 12 ) [25] and LuIG (Lu 3 Fe 5 O 12 ) [26] with in plane easy axis.…”

“…These excellent magneto-optical properties are of great significance to the design of integrated magneto-optical devices such as isolators and circulators. In addition, YIG films modified by rare Earth elements Ce (Lage et al, 2017), Bi (Sellappan et al, 2017;Soumah et al, 2018), Eu (Rosenberg et al, 2018) and Tm (Quindeau et al, 2017) can be used to control the magnetic anisotropy of the films. By reducing the thickness of these modified YIG films to a certain extent, the films show perpendicular magnetic anisotropy.…”
