Lime-cement concrete (LCC) is a non-structural concrete in which lime and cement are used as the main binders. However, although LCC has many applications in reducing the settlement of foundations and providing a support layer for shallow foundations, little research has been conducted to evaluate its behaviour in various moisture conditions. Previous researchers have studied the feasibility of using waste tires in conventional concrete to alleviate their negative environmental impacts. However, in field projects, rubber has not been widely used because its application leads to the strength reduction of concrete. In the case of LCC, attaining high strengths is not required and thus application of waste tire particles sounds reasonable. This research evaluated the impact of various rubber powder contents on the fresh, geotechnical and durability properties of LCC at different saturation degrees induced by the capillary action and groundwater level increment, which has not been studied before. The results of more than 320 tests showed that the application of tire powder increases workability and decreases the water absorption of LCC. Moreover, all 60-day cured specimens exposed to 100% saturation degree experienced a strength reduction of less than 10% by using rubber powder contents varying from 0 to 20%. Moreover, increasing the saturation degree from 0 to 100% decreased the average compressive strength by 13.5 and 22% for 60-day cured samples of two different mix designs. The results of this research confirm that LCC containing up to 10% rubber powder could be promisingly used underneath or close to the groundwater table without its strength and geotechnical properties being jeopardized due to rubber employment and/or exposure to ground moisture.

The present study proposes a novel fatigue life prediction considering the temperature load, which may be neglected in the traditional assessment of suspension bridge steel deck welds under dynamic vehicle load. Vehicle fatigue, pavement temperature, and temperature gradient models are developed based on the test data from the weight-in-motion system, U-rib welds, pavement temperature, and environment temperature. The U-rib-to-deck and U-rib-to-U-rib welds fatigue stresses are obtained considering both vehicle and temperature loads with transient analysis method in ANSYS package. Then, the temperature gradient fatigue stress spectra are calculated. After that, the fatigue life of two weld types is predicted considering the coupled vehicle-temperature loads. The results indicate that the fatigue stress varies linearly with the temperature of the asphalt concrete. The effect of the temperature on the weld’s fatigue life decreases as the distance increases between the welds and the pavement. The dynamic vehicle load results in a higher fatigue stress than the temperature gradient, indicating that the vehicle load contributes mainly to the bridge’s fatigue damage. Finally, it is calculated that the fatigue damage of two weld types is magnified 5.06 and 1.50 times when the temperature effect is considered after 100-year service of Nanxi Yangtze River Bridge.

With the increasing traffic volume and years of usage during the operation process, a bridge structure will experience aging and damage to different degrees, leading to the decline in bridge reliability and seriously affecting its operation safety. In this study, the bridge was abstracted into a beam structure for damage identification. Next, the influence of damage on the bridge structure was explored from the angles of its inherent frequency and displacement mode, respectively. Our results showed that whether the structure was damaged could be accurately judged by its inherent frequency, but the specific damage could not be further judged. Through the structural displacement curve, the rough range of structural damage could be judged; however, the damage could not be accurately positioned. The damage position could be accurately identified to some extent by taking the derivatives from the difference value of the structural displacement curve. The above conclusions were verified based on a double-span beam. We found that the above conclusions still held true for the double-span beam, thus proving their universality.
