Temporal and spatial characterization of myopia in China

Abstract: PurposeThe aim of this study was to characterize the temporal and spatial distribution of myopia among students aged 7–18 years, by analyzing the aggregation area and providing the basis for the prevention and control of myopia in China.MethodsA database for the spatial analysis of myopia in China during 1995–2014 was established using ArcGIS10.0 software as a platform for data management and presentation. A spatial autocorrelation analysis of myopia was undertaken, and a temporal and spatial scan analysis was… Show more

“…Myopia is a major public health concern precipitated by its increasing prevalence worldwide 1–7 and the associated risk of potentially blinding conditions 8–12 . Projections indicate that by the year 2050, over half of the world's population will have myopia, with 10% of those having high myopia 13 .…”

“…The situation of myopia among adolescents is particularly serious, especially in East Asian countries. Adolescents (young people aged 10–19) ( Das et al, 2017 ) are crucial to the future development and progress of a country, and adolescent eye health is related to the national health ( Shi et al, 2022 ), therefore, the high incidence of myopia will bring a burden to society and families. Thus, to slow down or even prevent the high incidence rate of myopia, it is necessary to clarify the mechanism of its occurrence and development, and this is the main direction of myopia research at present.…”

“…2 East Asian countries, especially China, have the highest prevalence of myopia, with studies indicating that more than 50% of high school students and young adults are affected by the condition. 3 Furthermore, the increasing prevalence of myopia among younger children and higher rates of progression during school years have led to an escalating burden. 4 High myopia is defined as a high degree of myopic refractive error ≤−6.00D and/or axial length (AL) ≥26.0 mm, 5 while pathological myopia is characterised by myopic maculopathy equal to or more severe than diffuse choroidal atrophy (META-analysis of Pathologic Myopia, META-PM) or the presence of posterior staphyloma.…”
